The Countess Diana decides she wants to marry her secretary Teodoro, despite the taboo of marrying across classes. Teodoro is already betrothed to Marcela, one of Diana’s waiting women, but breaks this engagement when he is wooed by the Countess.

A tussle ensues: messages are crossed, plots are hatched. Teodoro masquerades as the long lost son of an elderly statesman to leave the Countess free to marry him. Ultimately he confesses his deception, turning the decision over to Diana.
