"It is safest in matrimony to begin with a little aversion." -The Rivals
“Since I cannot prove a lover…I am determined to prove a villain.” -Richard III
February 24th – March 19th, 2006
Austin Playhouse 3601 South Congress Avenue in Penn Field
Two fantastic plays in rotating rep!
The Rivals, by Richard Brinsley Sheridan - Anyone interested in beautiful clothes, devastating wit and the chaos of romance should not miss Sheridan’s hilarious story of just how much trouble some people get into when falling in love. Satirizing the trappings of marriage and wealth with timeless humor, the affluent Captain Jack Absolute disguises himself as a poor naval officer to woo the idealistic Lydia Languish, to whom wealth means nothing. Mistaken identities and misconstrued circumstances set the stage for a hilarious satire of romance, materialism and social pretensions. Join us in laughing at just how ridiculous love can truly be!
Meet the most charismatic villain ever to command a stage - Shakespeare's Richard III—the man audiences have loved to hate for 400 years. Deformed in body and spirit, this engaging madman is obsessed with power. Driven by bloody ambition, cursed by nightmares and a chorus of queens, Richard grinds his adversaries beneath his lurching feet until he bestrides beleaguered England like a malevolent colossus. Does he fall? Of course, but not before he has taken us all on a wild and wickedly entertaining ride.
