EDUCATION AND OUTREACH: STUDENTS

Austin Shakespeare endeavors to connect with young people on a regular basis by expanding education and outreach efforts in the classroom and by bringing full productions before young audiences. They work with teachers to prepare their students for the theater experience so they will receive maximum benefit from Austin Shakespeare performance.

Shakespeare 20/20

Bring Shakespeare to life in your library and classrooms with a presentation by professional actors from Austin Shakespeare featuring your students' participation. Using verse from Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, and other plays, we invite students to meet TEKS requirements in ways that excite and enliven language-building skills. Half the class period uses trained Shakespearean actors to perform scenes of his work; the rest has students working directly with the actors to speak and perform the words themselves. Our philosophy is that Shakespeare is much better understood when seen and heard rather than simply read. Sessions start at $150, with discounts for multiple bookings. To schedule or for more information, contact education@austinshakespeare.org or alex@austinshakespeare.org.

Shakespeare 20/20 Teacher Workshop

All bookings for Shakespeare 20/20 include a preparatory workshop for teachers. We understand that introducing challenging texts to students can be daunting, and we offer a pre-session workshop to prepare you in advance of our session. Our trained specialist will work directly with you on the Shakespeare play of your choice. It’s a terrific way to maximize the potential of this dynamic workshop. Teacher Workshops are offered for $50. To schedule contact Alex Alford at alex@austinshakespeare.org.

World's Fastest Hamlet

It’s the lighter side of Hamlet when Austin Shakespeare performs it in 20 minutes; then 2 minutes; then 10 seconds! Four actors in multiple costumes play all the roles in this hilarious version of Shakespeare's classic, but The Bard's language holds its own throughout the comedy. Perfect for grades 6-12 and a guaranteed hit with students and adults alike. For information and rates, contact education@austinshakespeare.org or alex@austinshakespeare.org.

Young Shakespeare

Austin Shakespeare’s intensive summer performance group for students aged 11-19 returns for the summer of 2020 with a production of SHAKESPEARE'S comedy with songs TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA.  This intensive month-long experience culminates in a student-performed, professionally staged production at The Curtain Theater, Austin's own Elizabethan replica theater space. Students work on all aspects of theater, including acting, crew and production. June 19 - 28, 2020. Tuition reasonable.  Students must audition February 2020. For information, contact youngshakespeare@austinshakespeare.org.

Student "Informances"

Students experience heightened poetic language live on the stage at a specially crafted student "informance" during the run of our productions at The Long Center for the Performing Arts. Informances include scenes with the actors and a lively question and answer session with the students. It's a rare opportunity to interact with trained  professionals.
